Maslenitsa

Maslenitsa is one of favorite holidays by Russians and people from other FSU countries. The history of the Maslenitsa lies in the pagan time of Russia. The Orthodox Church could not take the Maslenitsa away from people therefor just adapted the holiday for Orthodox calender.

In 2008, Maslenitsa will be celebrated from March 3 to March 9. Maslenitsa is the last week before the onset of Great Lent. During Maslenitsa week, meat is already forbidden but the Maslenitsa week is still the last chance to partake of dairy products. More over Lent also excludes parties, secular music, dancing and other distractions from the spiritual life so the Maslenitsa is also the last week of social activities.

The pagan Russians honored the sun as a God. Maslenitsa is the seeing-off of winter and glorification of the sun. The name of holiday Maslenitsa has  the word "maslo" - butter in its base. Metaphorically the Russian phrase "To butter somebody up" means to make the person more kind and appeasable. And of course the main attribute of Maslenitsa week is Russian pancakes (blini) with butter. Being warm, round, and golden pancakes symbolize the sun. Pancakes (blini) are given to friends and family all through the week and are topped with  jam, sour cream, caviar, mushrooms, and  lots of butter.

During the Maslenitsa week people also lit the bonfires as a symbol of the sun.

You can see Russian Troikas (three horses harnessed abreast) and take a ride.

The famous games of Maslenitsa are the pole-climb and the storming of the snow fort. Men climb onto pole (about 40 or 50 feet high) to get some prizes that are hang on the top of the pole.

The culmination of the Maslenitsa week is the burning of the winter in effigy on Sunday evening. The "Maslenitsa" itself is a big doll that symbolizes winter (cold and severity).

The last day of Maslenitsa Week is called "Forgiveness Sunday"  The people ask God for His forgiveness and they ask  forgiveness of one another; and than the Great Lent begins.
