March, 8. History of International Women’s Day.

The idea of an International Women's Day  arose as a day of the women's struggle for women's rights.

On 8 March 1857 women working in the textile industry in New York City, in the US, staged a protest. Thousands of women marched to the rich areas of the city to protest against their miserable conditions. The police attacked the protesters and dispersed them. Two years later, again in March, these women formed their first labor union to  protect themselves and gain some basic rights in the workplace.

The second event took place in 1908 again in March. Again thousands women marched through New York City demanding  the right to unionization, women's suffrage, higher salaries, less working hours and banning of child labor.. They adopted the slogan "Bread and Roses", with bread symbolizing economic security and roses a better quality of life.

In Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1910 during the  international conference, that was held by socialist organizations from around the world, Clara Zetkin, German socialist, proposed an International Women's Day to mark the strike of women workers in the United States and to honor the movement for women's rights.  The proposal was greeted with unanimous approval by the conference of over 100 women from 17 countries.

The following year, 1911, International Women’s Day was marked for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.

In Russia the first International Women's Day was celebrated in 1913, March 2. At that day the meeting "scientific morning about women's questions" was organized in Saint Petersburg in a building of Kalashnikov corn-exchange. There were discussed questions about women's rights and State social security for the motherhood.

In February 1917  Russian women organized a strike for "bread and peace". Four days later the emperor Nikolas II  was forced to abdicate from throne and the new provisional Government granted women the right to vote. That historic Sunday fell on 23 February according to Julian calendar that was used in Russia at that time, but coincided with 8 March according to the Gregorian calendar.

In December 1977 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace.

After the Collapse of USSR the International Women's Day is still in the list of Sate holidays of Russian Federation. The "Marh, 8" also is celebrated in some countries of Former Soviet Union.

Thank you for the history on this day.  I've learned that it's very important in this particular pursuit.  Odd that it started in America and then got forgotten about here.  Well, maybe not *that* odd for the US...

BTW, Olga, are you a teacher just by nature or by profession?  (If you are, I wish I had had more teachers like you.  Hmmm, maybe there's another national trait in there, because one of my favorite history teachers did actually come from Russia  smiley )

Women of the countries of Former Soviet Union also organize their unions. The Russian women organizations as "The Union of Women of Russia", The All Russian Women organization "Women's dialog", "The Union of Mothers", "The Association of business women of Russia", "The Association of women of the Humanities and Science" and many others take an active part in the social and political life of country. They hold the conferences and meetings about social problems as war, low provision of pensions, child abuse and domestic violence and so on; about ecological problems as pollution of the environment. Russian women organize charitable funds to support the orphans, invalids and veterans. Russian women's organizations collaborate with the Women's organization of others countries in the World.

International Women's Day
8 March 2009

March, 8. History of International Women’s Day.

This day is similar to mother's day in the West, except that all women are celebrated.
For Russian women this day is very important, more important
than Valentine’s Day is for us in the West.

March, 8. History of International Women’s Day.

Be prepared with flowers, a box of chocolates, a card, etc. for the important women in your life. Historically, March 8 has long been internationally associated with women's rights, beginning with a famous mass protest in New York on the 8th March 1857, when women from sewing and shoe factories demonstrated for rights equal to those of men. Men had recently won a 10-hour workday. Women, however, were forgotten in the legislation and kept to a 16-hour workday. The strike was well-publicised and gained public support and became a day for regular demonstrations in the US and Europe.

In 1910, during a meeting of women in the Socialist International, a proposal was made to adopt March 8th as an international socialist holiday marking the struggle for women's rights. The International did adopt the idea, proclaiming just such a holiday, but did not assign to it any particular date, leaving that decision up to the party members from each country.

The day was first celebrated in St. Petersburg in 1913, but it would not become an official state holiday and day off, until 1965. Most likely, however, the greatest historical significance of the date for Russians is as the date that Russian women first gained the right to vote: on the 8th March 1917 (according to the Julian calendar), under the newly installed Provisional Government.

Russian women had campaigned for more rights as the war effort, during WWI, had necessitated that they take on a greater role in the workforce and society. As an interesting note to end on, American women would gain the right to vote only three years later.

However, with time the meaning of the Holiday evolved to an apolitical celebration of women with an emphasis on their beauty and motherhood.
Most late Soviet 8th of March postcards carried no political meaning.

HAPPY WOMEN'S DAY
to all Russian women in our lives!
